FAVOURITE MAKEUP BRUSHES 2016

by - January 18, 2017

Hello, and welcome to the very first post on my new Beauty Blog! I thought I would ease myself in gently and start with something nice and easy - makeup brushes!

Warning: There will be a lot of makeup tools within this blog post!

I'm going to display these in the order I would usually use them on my face so please excuse me if I jump from face to eyes and back again! These brushes aren't mega clean as it's only Wednesday and brush-cleaning-day is Sunday!

Real Techniques Miracle Complex Sponge - £5.99, Boots

This is my holy grail tool in all of my collection. I use this sponge damp, to apply my foundation. Right now my favourite way to apply foundation with this is using the side, however I do often use the flat side to press or pat the makeup on. When I'm having a lazy day (which is an occurrence that happens more than it should!) I use the pointy end to blend concealer. It leaves a gorgeous, flawless finish on the skin.

Real Techniques Miracle Mini Eraser Sponge - £5.99 for a pack of two, Boots

First off, please ignore the concealer/foundation stained state this sponge is in. I've never been able to get sponges absolutely spotless after foundation or concealer has touched them - if anyone has any tips then please let me know! I use this handy little sponge, again, damp, to blend and buff in concealer. It's able to reach places that a bigger brush or sponge cannot access, like the lower corner of the eyes, around the nose, etc. Now, I like to see this little sponge as the Miracle Complex Sponge's little sister. All of the fabulous benefits of the bigger one also carries over for the smaller one.

Side by side size comparison

This brush is actually one that I received in a Birchbox package in February 2016. It was a love-at-first-sight kind of deal. Let's all just take a moment to appreciate the beauty of Spectrum brushes... okay, let's move on. I use this 'wow' brush to set the concealer I've put on. It's so precise it's perfect to target the small areas. And it's literally so fluffy; if you're one that wants a puppy but your mum/dad/other half won't let you, just purchase this brush. Stroke it until kingdom come.

As I've got dry to very dry skin (no exaggeration) I very rarely use loose powder, my favourite to use is pressed power, specifically translucent or no colour powder. This brush, although fluffy, is dense enough to not waste any product and evenly pack on the product.

MAC 190 Foundation Brush - £27.50 MAC

This paddle brush is what I use whenever I see any lines on my face. During my lazy days when I'm either running late or can't be bothered so don't apply any eye shadow, I use this brush to blend out the foundation that has set in the fine lines and creases on my eyelid. Nobody wants harsh lines now, do they?

Morphe Brushes M441 Pro Firm Blending Crease Brush - £5.50, Beauty Bay

I'm not joking when I say if there was a brush heaven, this would be it. This brush is fantastic for the crease, especially the transition colour. It deposits the pigment exact where you want it and for the price, I can't say a bad word against it!

Again, another brush that does exactly what it says on the tin. The high quality, synthetic bristles of this brush make it an absolute dream to use, applying and blending out shadows. It deposits product evenly and minimises any wastage.

This Morphe G11 brush is a recent purchase. However it's quickly become one of my favourite brushes of all time and led me to wonder how I ever survived without it. Its precise bristles make applying gel liner, in particular creating a wing, unbelievably easy, my 9-week-old cousin could give you a sharp winged eyeliner with this brush. I mean, he can't hold his own head up yet, but you get the gist.

We've all got that one bit of makeup or makeup tool that is so extravagant and ridiculously priced that we desperately want but can't justify spending our hard earned pennies on. For me, that thing (among many, many more) is the Nars Ita brush (£43!). I don't even earn £43 from my part-time job working behind a bar!!!! This Real Techniques brush has been compared to the Nars Ita brush many times and it's often been suggested as a dupe for it, at nearly half the price. It is truly amazing at sculpting and chiselling out those cheek bones. The weighted handle also makes it extremely comfortable and 'natural' to use.
The only teeny, tiny issue I have with it is its bristles. They're so firm and 'scratchy' almost that when you try to blend the contour colour out rather than having a sharp line, it tends to drag product and remove the foundation underneath it. Which leads me onto my next brush...

I have two of these! I use this brush either after I've used the previous Real Techniques brush to contour to blend out the harsh lines, or if I don't want that much of a defined contour, or even just want a bronzed look, I'll use this brush on its own. It is domed and almost tapered which surprisingly makes it a good contour brush. It is also amazing for bronzing the forehead as it's the perfect size!

Funnily enough I use this blush brush for applying blush! If the blusher is very highly pigmented then this brush is perfect for a quick swipe across the apples of the cheeks. It's a very flexible brush in terms of it never deposits too much or not enough, it's always just enough for me. One thing I absolutely love about this brush is I've had it for countless years, it's gone through dozens, if not hundreds, of washes with me, yet it's still as fluffy as a cloud.

To finish off with a bit of highlight and my favourite brush to apply highlight with! This used to be a brush that you would get in a set and think 'what the heck do I do with this?'. However it all became clear when highlighter started to get more well-known and now I honestly can't live without this brush. No other brush deposits highlight in quite the right way as this fan brush does. Mine is looking a bit old and battered and it is a bit more difficult to clean than other brushes but for the blinding finish it gives, no complaints from me!

I hope you enjoyed this post about my favourite brushes. Let me know what your favourite brushes are in the comments. Are there any that I need in my life?!

Thanks for reading lovelies,
